I'm pretty sure that my incident isn't the worst that any can go through, but it is nice that through my story i can remind others to keep laughing, thats the ultimate goal with my book. glad to know that i inspired one.

I look at my art now and notice that my imagery looks a lot weirder now. Read the caption on the bottom of the pictures and you will notice that the right-handed stuff is more one point, and the left hand stuff, after I was shot in the head is more distorted. I have a different outlook on every facet of life now, writing, or art. I am more than comfortable with this, and I wrote this because I still get asked by clients if my art is still the same. Truth is the formulas are formulas and never change, but the brain does, and mine did. I am not sucking my own dick here by saying, "I'm a fucking weirdo dude," I'm just saying my thought process is forever changed because of this, but for the better, it's more fun. Thanx!!!

In the late 90's, the Bizarro tattoo crew was formed, a weirdo, productive, and true art crew of four. At the time it was formed at Sacred in downtown Oakland there was only four of them, with room for another tattooer. I was tattooing at Industrial Strength in Berkeley at the time. The Bizarro Crew at Sacred was Kicker, Karl, Lil' D, and Vinse. I looked up to them but was intimidated to walk in there because I felt that I needed to research more about the history of tattooing, design ethic and formula, and machine tuning. I never met anyone there except for Vinse because we went to high school together in Fremont, but I wanted to walk into Sacred and pick their brains. The Bizarro tattoo that I wanted to earn is only done by one of the four Bizarros, the tattoo is on the left palm, is an all-seeing eye and triangle, and has five lines above it, one for each Bizarro, and I wanted to be the fifth. Through my want to be one, I worked to make a better tattoo, learned my tattoo history, and learned more about my machines. After painting and drawing everyday, reading, and fucking with my machines I felt like I was ready to walk into Sacred and try to talk to the rest of the Bizarros, that crew reminded me of the movie Young Guns where they say, “Regulators, mount up, but you cant be any geek off the street, you gotta be handy with the steel to earn your keep!”

buy viagra online safely

Through years of the rest of the Bizarros working at Sacred, and me tattooing at Industrial, they spread out before I was able to walk in there. I watercolored everyday but something just wasn't right, I knew that I wasn't doing it properly. after a few years pass Lil' D starts tattooing up the street from me at Industrial so I take the chance and introduce myself. I walk into the shop and Lil' D is watercoloring. I watch him paint, and start to pick his brain, he was more than willing to tell me how he watercolors. Usually in this craft the answer is always no to another person that tattoos, unless you know that they are a tattooer and care. What Lil' D showed me that day is what changed my whole perspective on watercoloring, I felt like he taught me how to do it right, and still do,thank you Lil' D.

One day, drawing at Industrial, a tall, fully tattooed man walks in to say hello to his buddy Bert. Bert and him have been best friends since their childhood in southern California. Bert says his name and I think, oh fuck that's Kicker, and run to my tattoo room until he was gone because it was like stage fright to me. After traveling around for a bit, I hear Kicker tell Bert that he is tattooing at Sacred again. He then leaves, then I continue to draw. I finally build up the courage the next time Kicker comes in to talk to him. He then shows me his script, and I show him my lame excuse for mine, and he says stop by Sacred and I will help you with it, I was exited, even though I never did. Kicker then tells me “If you want to cover some shifts down here at Sacred you can.”

“I'm on it,”I said. Tattooing at Industrial gave me the time to learn the right way by order of myself, but working along side of Kicker at Sacred made me have the want even more to be a real tattooer. Kicker and I would always go back and forth with our drawings, and tattooing in general. I felt like I had finally reached that point but Vinse, Karl, and Lil' D were gone. Then Kicker moves back to southern California, and Matt Howse starts at Sacred. Matt and I fed off of each other with tattooing, he had the want just like I did. Then in early 2005 Matt and I drive down to Southern California to visit Kicker, and get tattooed. The day before we leave back north Kicker says, “Devon, notice how there is five lines above the all-seeing eye on the Bizarro tattoo? There is only four of us, I want you too be the fifth, I just need to ask the others first.” I was so exited, then Kicker calls Vinse before he starts the Bizarro tattoo on my left hand, he gets the okay, then starts. That tattoo only took 5 minutes but if hurt so fuckin' bad. It is such an honor to be a part of Bizarro, and it's weird to me that I have this Bizarro tattoo on my left palm. Before I was shot I would tell people that were left handed, had an all-seeing eye in their forehead, then I get shot and am now left handed, with the all-seeing eye Bizarro tattoo that I got in 2005. Hail the triangle, thank you Kicker, Lil' D', Karl, and Vinse.

She also interviewed my mom, which is awesome, but of course I remember things from growing up a lot different than her, and when any of us kids say, “Remember when mom...,” she says that it didn't happen. All of us kids remember these things happening, and I gather that my mom wishes they didn't. I know how these things go, it seems no matter how you tell the person interviewing you how it happened over, and over again, they seem to twist it all up. (example: what do you do every day?, you say, "Well I ride my skateboard." Then the article comes out and says, "Well, I roller blade around, with lipstick, wig, and fishnet stockings on.")
we would skate this shitty, slanted, waxed curb at the bus stop. i tried to skate by myself for a little and was turned off quickly. the fun of skating with others ignites you to try anything, and by yourself is like taking yourself out to dinner. i saw the bus that would take me to the daily city bart and so i dove into my pockets.”yes!!!”, i had just enough change to take the bus to bart. i got on the bus. i was happy that by the time that i would get to the spots in sf i would not be skateboarding by myself for the rest of the day. i get off the bus and walk to the ticket machine. i reach in my pockets only to notice that i do not have bart fair. i didnt even have bus money to get back to pacifica. i walk to the front and start asking for spare change. i make more than enough to bus it back quickly, i also had enough to bart it to emb(surprisingly). i still wanted to go skate sf so i bought the ticket, and hopped on the train. the word i would dream about every night came over the loudspeaker “THE NEXT STOP EMBARCADERO!”. i get off the train, and as every time taking the escalator to the top was awesome. the giant buildings of sf as you reach the top, the people everywhere, and the car horns honking. the buildings were there but this was about 10-10:30 on a weekday so much less people and honking cars. i start skating down market to the center, the sound of the brick under my wheels was soothing, and the street was lined with square, waxed benches. i skate the block to emb and notice that a few of the locals are sitting on the pyramid in the center, a few under the overhang by the gonz, a few by the ledge with the gap in the end that lined the fountain, and a little group around the metal tables. those locals seamed to be there any time of the day, going to emb was like skating in a non-violent prison yard. i skate through the center to the back side, where the fast food spot was. i was starving but knew that i only had enough to get back to pacifica, but thought to myself that maybe if i use the money i spanged and get one of the breakfasts they had a deal on, that i could just bum some more. i get to the front of the glass door and stop, i was trying to decide, spend the money, eat the food, skate the rest of sf on a full stomach, or be hungry?, then i said fuck it and started to skate away. as i was skating away i looked over and noticed a kid with a skateboard, sitting in the window and eating. i hopped off my board, and started looking him up and down. as a kid it was easy to tell when somebody was a poser, just by their clothing, or set up they were riding. this kid had a huge afro, was about my age, and i remember him because around that time we all had huge stupid clothes, and small wheels, but not him, or the kids that he hung out with. he then finishes his food, and as i’m skating away he stops me and says ”hey!,you hungry?”, i say “yes, but no money, i’m good”. he says ”come back here” so i skate back. he says ”i noticed that you were watching me eat, let me buy you some food”i say okay and walk back inside with him to the fast food spot. i point out the breakfast, and he buys it, then he says ”i’m going around the corner to skate emb, if you come i’ll see you there, if not i’m sure i’ll see you again” i said thank you and that was the last time that i saw lee smith. thank you lee!!!

Devon, for everyone who doesn’t know, can you tell us what happened to you last year?

I was shot in the head on July 12th at one in the morning, 2006 in east Oakland. I was tattooing and I rode my bike home to my now ex-girlfriends house and some guys broke in and I told her to get out the back window and she couldn’t because there are bars on it and they won’t budge. So I held the door closed and one of the guys came up to the door and he said “Oh Shit there are people in here” and he shot threw the door and I was shot in the head. I was in a coma for a month. When I woke up out of the coma my right side was atrophied, all my muscles and stuff. So I wasn’t able to draw or paint or tattoo with my right hand because I developed muscle tremors in my thumb and index fingers so every time I focused or wrote, painted, tattooed or anything with my right hand it would shake, like muscle spasms so I switched to my left. I trained myself how to be left-handed. Now I’m living in the city taking tattoo appointments in Oakland with my left hand.

When and where did you start skateboarding?

1987 I started skateboarding in Pacifica, which was pretty cool. Keith Cochrane from Think skateboards lived right down the street so we used to haggle him for free wheels and stuff, free boards. And Wade Speyer was always hanging at his house and my friend Rich had a half pipe up the street from Keith so we used to skate the half pipe in his backyard all the time and Mike Kemper from Think and Jeff Swindel, before he was arrested would hang out and skate and stuff. And once the street skating craze came about all crazy Rich cut his ramp down and built a street course, which we skated, in his driveway.

Those were the guys that got you hyped as a kid?

And also Eric J. He was the best skater in Pacifica. He would ollie bushes and stuff off of little kickers.

Tell me about San Francisco street skating in the early nineties?

I used to go to Embarcadero a lot as a kid when there was always a bunch of pros there, Sean Sheffey used to hang out, he was skating for Life skateboards and there was Javontae Turner, Henry Sanchez, and Mike Carroll and those guys would hang out every day. I remember when Jamie Thomas and Keith Hufnagel first came about and Jamie Thomas was skating for Invisible and I think Keith Hufnagel was too before he got on Real and there was a overhang that we used to sleep under in Embarcadero, I don’t know if you can do that anymore. We’d be hanging out past Bart time. It was actually nice in the early nineties to skate San Francisco. Skating in downtown on all the brick sidewalks and you can hear your wheels and stuff. Right up the street from EMB there was Goldie blocks that had a bank with the marble ledges and stuff that used to be in old videos.

Who were you favorites from that era?

Keith Hufnagel is one, cause he would ollie really, really high over everything in San Francisco, downhill and while he was going super fast over street gaps, he just didn’t care. And Jamie Thomas after he did the other thing that the kid broke his knees on. The leap of faith. And Gonz of coarse.

What about skateboard artists?

Pushead, Usugrow, Mike Giant was pretty cool. When I was growing up Jim Phillips was awesome. I saw a lot of his stuff. Mark Gonzales was pretty good, I like his stuff it was really goofy and simple looking. The guy that did Stereo Sounds boards, I think it was a SF based artist.

When did you get started as a tattoo artist/ what advise would you give to aspiring artists?

1996 I started tattooing. I stared drawing…my moms an artist so I always drew but I really took an interest in it in 1996. Just watercolor and draw a lot. I filled up a couple sketchbooks. Pretty much I was sitting in a coffee shop in Fremont and I would just like have a book and mimic all the old tattoos and stuff and one time a guy came up to me and he was like “ oh you want to learn how to tattoo.”

Did you practice on yourself?

No willing friends. And it was usually in a kitchen.

Is Devon Blood your real name?

Yes. I think it’s like a clan name. I think its Scottish, like originally it was Clan Blood. It’s the name I was born with. It’s my mom’s name. I was born at UCSF hospital.

You come from a big family. Give me the rundown.

Yeah, I have six sisters and one brother. One sister actually died when I was four. She died of SIDS.

What’s the worst tattoo you were ever asked to do?

This girl in Oakland wanted a panther perched on a branch with some script under it that said “Sweet pussy underneath.”

Did you do it?

Yeah I did.

What do you think about tattoo artists designing Camel cigarette boxes?

I’ not down with it cause it doesn’t go to anything good. Camel tried to tackle that and I was pissed. People started doing artwork for Camel and I was like are you kidding me.

What about all the TV shows?

Oh fuck, TV shows are kind of like a double-edged sword. In a lot of ways they help and in a lot of ways they destroy. Now there are a bunch of people that wouldn’t have gotten tattooed before that because of TV shows would get tattooed now but now all the tattoos that they want all have to have meaning. It couldn’t just be a simple Jim Phillips screaming hand or something. It has to be like the screaming hand is symbolic of long life or I had my hand ripped off as a kid or something.

Things can’t just look cool anymore?

Right, exactly, and people can’t just get tattooed.

Left handed flash 2007

shows want to portray a story to every tattoo and they do a lot of first timers.

Right and they interview everybody and that’s not the way tattoos work, man. You see a shop and you walk into it cause you want to get tattooed. In these TV shows you wait in this long line outside this tattoo show that has a stage and get interviewed and if you get accepted then you get on the TV show to get your stupid little tattoo. Pus there’s what really ruining it. Like these TV shows are counting a bunch of money and buying stuff. We don’t have that kind of money. They’re pretty much displaying that we have money or something so its causing tattoo shops to get robbed and to get audited. It’s totally fake.

Could you ever live in Oakland again?

Yeah, it was dumb of me to hang out in east Oakland. I’ve always known not to hang out there. Even when I was a little kid and I grew up in Pacifica I always knew to stay away from east Oakland, to just not go there. I knew that place was hard. Even when I lived in Berkeley people would tag ESO and it was cause they were representing east Oakland. Where I got shot is called the murder dubs on 21st and International. Never again will I live in East Oakland. I lived in Oakland for 10 years and I was totally fine and I lived in 10 different ghettos.

Tell us the story with the new Real graphic; what’s this one all about?

It’s pretty cool, before Real used a right-handed design from before I was shot. And this time they wanted a left handed design so I drew and painted something, there gonna put that on a board so that’s pretty cool to me that they’re willing to do that. Its called The Left Hand Path, it’s supposed to be the gate of hell with a goat hoof coming out of it and a left hand with wings coming out of the clouds and the goat hoof is pulling it into the gates. The way it’s balanced the hoof and the hand are in the center so it’s kinda like a struggle. The left hands trying not to get pulled into the gate and the hoof is trying not to get pulled into the clouds.

Doesn’t the left hand have biblical reference as well?

Originally, in the late 1800s and early 1900s left handers were changed to right handers in school because of some bible verse ‘the left hand path is the path of the devil.” Bible thumpers got scared of left-handers and changed them to right-handers. That still happens nowadays, I still meet left-handers that were changed to right-handers in school. If you look at buttons, everything is made for right hands. Desks, old desks anyways, were always right hand desks. Just everything, total right hand world and it was built off of this bible verse. In the 80’s public enemy had a song and the chorus was “be afraid of the hand that coming from the left because the hand that’s coming from the left belongs to the devil.”

What are your plans for the future?

I just want to get married and settle down, start skating again, get my balance back and keep tattooing.

Cardiel is skating again.

I actually want to meet his doctor that said he should try herbal medicine. That’s amazing. I remember hearing about him a couple years ago, like are you kidding me Cardiel’s paralyzed from the neck down. Then my friend sent me a comment on MySpace showing that he was dropping in on ramps and stuff. Wow. Inspiring.

Anyone you’d like to thank?

Katie Rose, Lynda Blood, Dave from Alternative Tentacles, Alex Turan, Jim Thiebaud, Fairmont hospital in San Leandro, Highland hospital in Oakland for saving my life, the neurosurgeon, Doctor Chris Patel.

Welcome to DevonBloodTattoo.com. This is the personal website of Devon Blood. Blood is not an alias, it is the name I was born with. I was conceived in the San Quinton parking lot, born at UCSF, and raised in Pacifica. I have six sisters and one brother–I am the second oldest. All raised by my mom. I had seven sisters but when I was five one of them died. It broke my mom and my dad up. My mom is an artist and my dad is a musician. I started skateboarding in 1987 when I was seven. Skateboarding pretty much engulfed my life until I learned to draw.

On July 12, 2006, I was shot in the head. It happened at my now ex-girlfriends house at 1:00a.m. She didn’t want to sleep alone, so I rode my bike over to her house in East Oakland after work. We awoke to the sounds of several people breaking in. I asked her to put her clothes on and get out through the back, she said that she couldn’t because there were bars on the window, so I said screw it and held the bedroom door closed. One guy came up to the door and shouted, “Oh shit.. theres people here”. He fired blindly into the door as I was holding it closed and I got shot in the head at close range. I was in a coma for a month and had a bunch of weird dreams. I am originally right-handed but when I awoke I had developed micro-tremors in my right hand, now I am painting and tattooing with my left hand.
